Using Sound to Define a Setting

The story of The Spitfire Grill spans across a number of seasons, each demanding their own climate and time. As such, different soundscapes were used in order to define each as unique and help the audience recognize the passage of time between scenes. The audience first walks into the house to the sounds of an early winter with wind and non-migratory birds - birds were key element of the sound design, being symbolic of Percy's new beginnings in Gilead. From there, the soundscapes would evolve from cold and empty winter nights to the vibrant blossoming of life in the spring and summer to everything in between.

Building Over-the-Ear Microphones

Despite this being a small and intimate performance venue, actors were placed in mics so that an even balance of vocals and live pit music could be mixed together. With the number and speed of some quick changes, it was easier to build ear rigs, like the one pictured below, for actors who often wore hats or hoods so that placement could remain clear and consistent.
