As this was a rock musical and the concept was to capture as much of that concert influence as possible, I applied my experience from working at Starlight Theatre, a Kansas City roadhouse that hosts both concerts and musicals, the previous summer for my design. Being the designer and mixer at the same time allowed me make live changes to the show's sound as rehearsals ran, something especially useful for a show as big and fast-paced as American Idiot.
