Myths and Hymns
Webster University Sargent Conservatory of Theatre Arts
Dir. Evangeline Whitlock

Myths and Hymns by Adam Guettel is a song cycle about the intertwining of faith and desire found in examples of Ancient Greek and Christian beliefs. For this show, while there was little additional sound effects during the run, the audience was first greeted with a lush soundscape that mirrored the visible set when walking into the theatre. These were created in studio with everyday objects so as to bring the mundane into something fantastical — the flap of bird wings was created from slapping different gloves together; the wind was a series of towels, coats, and blankets combined with shaken leafy greens — and were then mapped out across the house using PanLab, inspired by USITT'S 2023 Sound X immersive experience.

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Dwayne Hartford and based upon the novel of the same name by Kate Chopin follows the titular character of Edward the china rabbit as he travels and learns to love others more than himself. For this show, underscore tracks were composed by the music director for actors on stage to play throughout the show. There were a few instances that, due to the amount of movement on stage, both musicians had to set aside their instruments when music was still needed; for these, the tracks were recorded and mixed ahead of time.

The Spitfire Grill
Webster University Sargent Conservatory of Theatre Arts
Dir. Jennifer Wintzer

The story of The Spitfire Grill, by James Valcq and Fred Alley, spans across a number of seasons, each demanding their own climate and time. As such, different soundscapes were used in order to define each as unique and help the audience recognize the passage of time between scenes. The audience first walks into the house to the sounds of an early winter with wind and non-migratory birds - birds were key element of the sound design, being symbolic of Percy's new beginnings in Gilead. From there, the soundscapes would evolve from cold and empty winter nights to the vibrant blossoming of life in the spring and summer to everything in between.
